Automation, digitalization, and increasing connectivity have fundamentally changed the way people learn, work, play, create, communicate, and participate in social life. The ECDF conducts interdisciplinary research on the interplay between technology and social structures in order to strengthen the opportunities offered by digital change and limit the risks. A particular focus is on the future of a European data economy.

Digital innovations are fundamentally changing our healthcare and clinical practice. The ECDF conducts interdisciplinary research into how networked, AI-supported healthcare systems can be designed to be patient-centered, secure, trustworthy, and fair, enabling better care while ensuring the responsible handling of sensitive health data.
SustainableCities
More than half of the world's population lives in cities, which play a key role in socio-ecological transformation. The ECDF is researching how digitalization can contribute to the design of sustainable, resilient, and people-centered urban spaces. Urban planning, infrastructure, and governance are being examined using data-driven, participatory, and innovative approaches.
