StadtManufaktur

Real laboratories for a liveable city

THE IDEA
The StadtManufaktur is an initiative of the Technische Universität Berlin together with the Zentrum Technik und Gesellschaft (ZTG – 'Center for Technology and Society') and the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF). Its aim is to solve complex urban challenges by combining science and practice. In the projects of the StadtManufaktur, scientists work together with city stakeholders to develop forward-looking solutions for Berlin. In a long-term process, everyday experts can work together with scientists on Berlin's future.

STADTMANUFAKTUR@CITYLAB BERLIN
We work closely with CityLAB Berlin, an experimental laboratory for the city of the future. CityLAB serves as a network, think tank and shop window. In the heart of the city – at the former Tempelhof Airport – people, projects and solutions come together to make Berlin even more worth living. The StadtManufaktur is pleased about an imaginative and cooperative cooperation.

PILOT PROJECT
Our initial project is "Last Mile - New Neighbourhood". The project will be dedicated to the systematic interweaving of housing and mobility data. The aim is to develop new neighbourhood concepts in Neu-Hohenschönhausen as a basis for a sustainable transformation of the monostructural urban structure. In interdisciplinary teams, the concepts are to be developed in a participatory manner with civil society. In cooperation with the ECDF professors: Prof. Helena Milhaljevic – Analytics and Big Data, HTW Berlin and Prof. Max von Grafenstein – Digital Communication & Self-Determination, UdK Berlin

WHAT'S NEXT?
The StadtManufaktur is an open innovation platform. Be it questions of climate adaptation or the promotion of social interaction, the establishment of sustainable mobility concepts or the transformation to a city of short distances – the StadtManufaktur is the point of contact for joint project development, it facilitates matching between scientists* and partners* from politics, business, culture and civil society, it accompanies joint projects and bundles the extensive findings from the projects in a common knowledge pool.

REAL LABORATORIES FOR BERLIN
The projects are developed in the form of real laboratories. A real laboratory is a transdisciplinary format that takes place in real space. In real laboratories, scientists work together with practitioners. The partners profit from each other: knowledge from practice flows together with scientific know-how – this results in solutions that can exist not only on paper, but in direct application. Together, the building blocks for a city of the future worth living in can thus be developed and implemented.
