Timm Teubner is officially a W3 professor at TU Berlin since October 7th, 2024. With his appointment, the industrial engineer is also launching the new department of Digital Service Engineering, which will research the interaction between people and digital technology in the context of online platforms, AI applications, and cybersecurity.

“I am very pleased that I can continue to research and teach at the TU Berlin and the ECDF. Above all, I am looking forward to being able to make a research contribution to highly relevant and current topics with the department,” says Teubner. His research is based primarily on quantitative approaches, including online, laboratory and field experiments, structured surveys, network analysis and the analysis of secondary data using statistical and data mining methods. Among other topics, he examines the effect of online reviews in the platform economy, for example the role of fake reviews, or the interaction of users with AI tools such as ChatGPT, including when this leads to errors. In addition to research, the department's offerings also include methodological courses in the area of data science, practice-oriented formats for the development of digital services, as well as events on social and economic networks and platforms.

For the Einstein Foundation Berlin and the Senate Chancellery for Science and Research, the sustainable establishment of the ECDF in Berlin as a science location is of particular importance. The Senate Chancellery therefore announced the prospect of ten permanent ECDF professorships. The selection process for these positions was carried out in 2020 and 2021, with five professors being selected for permanence in each case. The first three professors were able to take up their permanent professorships in 2023 and 2024, and six more are to follow after the appointment of Timm Teubner.

From April 2018 until his permanent position, Timm Teubner was ECDF Professor for Trust in Digital Services at the ECDF and the TU Berlin, where he primarily researched how trust develops among buyers and sellers online, from a sociological and economic perspective. Timm Teubner has also been a member of the ECDF Board of Directors since 2023. He previously studied industrial engineering and then received his doctorate in microeconomics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
