Lecture Series: Applied Cybernetics

Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Fischer will give a lecture on "The Variety Concept in Theory and Practice of W. Ross Ashby" at Einstein Center Digital Future on December 19, 2019. He is professor at the Department of Architecture and Design of Xi'an Jiaotong – Liverpool University Suzhou in China.

The event is part of the lecture series "Applied Cybernetics - On the frictions concerning the mate[real]ization of cybernetics systems". It is organized by the Department of Media Sciences of  Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Institute of Philosophy, History of Literature, Science & Technology of  Technische Universität Berlin.

Abstract:
Change in systems of different kinds takes place within the fundamental possibilities of said systems. Around 1950s W. Ross Ashby introduced the concept of variety as a term and quantitative measure for the fundamental changeability of systems. This lecture deals with Ashby's development of the concept of variety in theory and practice with special regard to a series of
experimental devices developed by Ashby. On this basis, the current relevance of variety as well as some outstanding research achievements will be developed.
