Parliamentary evening: How sexualized deepfakes shake our democracy

On October 18, 2023, HateAid, the German Women Lawyers Association (djb) and the Federal Association of Women's Counseling Centers and Women's Emergency Hotlines (bff) are jointly organizing a Parliamentary Evening on the topic of "How sexualized deepfakes shake our democracy - and everyone looks the other way". The event will start at 7 p.m.

// Content

The face of a politician, a journalist or a scientist unintentionally on someone else's naked body - that is a real danger. Fake and truth have become almost indistinguishable. So-called deepfakes are used almost exclusively to create image-based sexualized violence, i.e. non-consensual sexualized images. Women are predominantly affected. The goal of such deepfakes: to humiliate and silence those affected.  This has consequences for society as a whole - and shakes up our democracy. Criminal law has so far been too unsystematic and incomplete to counter this problem.

In cooperation with the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin we will show the twenty-minute short film "My Blonde GF". In a subsequent panel discussion, we will discuss gaps in protection and the dangers of deepfakes for democracy, as well as recommendations for action for policymakers.

Our experts on the panel:

  • Prof. Dr. Alexander Godulla, University of Leipzig
  • PD Dr. Anja Schmidt, German Women Lawyers Association
  • Dr. Laura Braam, State Media Authority NRW
  • Josephine Ballon, HateAid

Moderation: Chris Köver

The Parliamentary Evening is a joint event of HateAid, the German Women Lawyers Association (djb) and the Federal Association of Women's Counseling Centers and Women's Emergency Hotlines (bff).
