Seventy-seven years after the liberation of Auschwitz, antisemitism is still being expressed both publicly and violently. In recent years, the Anti-Defamation League reported record numbers of antisemitic incidents throughout the world, indicating an alarming increase in violent attacks.Antisemitism as well as other forms of hate speech and disinformation thrives on social media, which connect users and groups and creates a digital echo chamber. Whilst social media companies such as Facebook or Twitter claim to roll out moderation tools to keep hate speech, misinformation, and incitements to violence off their platforms, users are perpetually publishing content despite it being prohibited.

Our recent studies on hate speech and antisemitism online reveal several new trends that will be presented and discussed in this lecture: 1. The migration within social media (e.g., TikTok); 2. The use of the Darknet; 3. The power of the algorithms; and 4. The secret language of hate speech.

The lecture is part of the conference “Hate Speech on the Internet – Identifying Digital Antisemitism” and will take place at the Einstein Center Digital Future. In addition, a livestream will be available. The event will be moderated by Simone Rafael, the head of Digital at Amadeu Antonio Foundation. Please note, that the lecture will be held in English.
