The Einstein Center Digital Future was represented in two high-level Brussels events contributing to the development of the EU Water Resilience Strategy. The first Water Resilience Forum took place in December 2025 and Andrea Cominola, Professor of Digital Water Systems, took part in the panel on Digital Transformation for Water Management, where discussions focused on how to move from technological potential to meaningful uptake in practice. The exchange highlighted key priorities for accelerating digitalization in the water sector, including the shift from data to actionable insight, the importance of standardization and data sharing, and the need for viable business models. Andrea Cominola also stressed the importance of strengthening education, research, and digital literacy across the water sector to support long-term digital transformation.

In March 2026, Prof. Dr. Andrea Cominola also joined the Stakeholder Consultation on the Water Resilience Research and Innovation Strategy during EU Ocean Days. The discussion explored how research and innovation at EU level can support a water-smart economy, with particular attention to strengthening the transfer between science and practice, enabling more evidence-based water management, and improving the economic viability of digital and water-efficient solutions.

As Andrea Cominola noted during the consultation, “Building water resilience is a bit like painting and sculpture: in some areas we need to add new layers, while in others progress requires removing barriers.” These contributions reflect the Einstein Center Digital Future’s ongoing engagement at the intersection of water governance, digital transformation, and climate resilience, and its commitment to supporting European policy debates with academic research.
