Staged Reading "The Committee"

Information comes in multifarious forms – truth, fiction, lies, memory, impressions, not to mention hearsay, opinion and gossip.  Alongside the challenge of defining information is an ethical challenge: the commitment to identify information accurately and to clarify its purpose. While today's digital technologies may complicate this process, ethical issues are not new. They arise from human nature.  

The short play named “The Committee” explores these ethical questions as they relate to discovering and using information. Set in New York in the 1980s, this one-act play centers on the ambitious editor of an investigative magazine. Due to rising staff costs and declining subscription numbers, his life's work is threatened by bankruptcy.  Suddenly, a successful businessman offers a loan to save the magazine, provided that the journalist compromises his ethical principles and abandons a fact-finding investigation into illegal activities of great importance to the financier.

About the actors:

Martin Baecker is an actor, narrator and storyteller who studied with Mike Bernardin and Susan Patrick at Actors Space Berlin. He has appeared in the feature films Softness of Bodies and House of Rooms, as well as in various short films and the stage productions of Altbau and Tyrants. 

Juan Hurtado Bergeth studied at the Actors Studio and Catalyst Institute for Creative Arts. He has appeared in several short films and two feature films. Juan is also a percussionist and dabbles in stand-up comedy.
