Science for everyone, to participate and touch - "Knowledge City Berlin 2021" tells the story of research, knowledge and coexistence in the capital. For this joint project, Berlin's largest and most renowned institutions and players in science and research are joining forces. The Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) is involved in the diverse events, which will take place from June 26 to August 22, 2021, as an open-air program in front of the Rotes Rathaus, among other locations.
How safe do we want to live? Can digitization contribute to climate protection and sustainability? What might new mobility concepts look like? Over almost eight weeks, exhibitions, conferences, science slams, cinema films and other formats will be devoted to these three major topics: Health, Climate and Living Together. On five different occasions, ECDF-scientists will provide insights into their research fields. In different formats, they will inform about the latest approaches, innovative solutions and how each individual can benefit from them. The whole program is available //here. Action Booth ECDF / SimRa (Safety in Cycling)
Prof. Dr. David Bermbach (ECDF Professor for "Mobile Cloud Computing" / TU Berlin)
With the help of the SimRa app, data will be collected - in a data protection-compatible manner - on where in the city cyclists encounter clusters of hazards, what type they are, whether they are temporally or locally clustered, and where the main traffic flows on bicycles. Subsequently, cyclists will be asked to categorize and annotate these hazardous situations and share the upload to the project servers. With the help of this data, it will be possible to gain a comprehensive overview of bicycle traffic in Berlin as well as the dangerous situations that occur. The data obtained in the project will be evaluated together with partners from other departments such as urban and regional planning, but also with the involvement of interested citizens, in order to achieve sustainable changes with the help of the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection.

Prof. Dr. Berit Greinke (ECDF Professor for "Wearable Computing" / UdK Berlin)
Textiles and Sound: the teams of Einstein Center Digital Future professors Felix Biessmann (Beuth), Berit Greinke (UdK) and Emmanuel Baccelli (FU), together investigated the use of e-textile sensors and gesture tracking technologies to track the movements of an orchestra conductor. The result is a customized interactive costume. The textile wearables on display combine humans, machines and music. These garments are equipped with motion sensors, allowing electronic music to be controlled by body movements and gestures. The custom-made, interactive suit is used during the Verworner-Krause Chamber Orchestra performance and translates the conductor's gestures into sound effects - almost like a wearable instrument. This and three other interactive garments for trumpet, cello and vibraphone will be on display at the action booth starting at 3 p.m.

Hands-on research: The Future Security Lab at the Einstein Center Digital Future presents current security research projects in a vivid and innovative way. How secure do we want to live? What can technology (not) do? We show interactive scenarios and invite you to participate and discuss: Organized crime, opportunities and challenges of digitalization, power outages - the topic area of security offers a broad spectrum. The project "Future Lab of the Public Safety Research Forum" of Freie Universität Berlin is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Science Slam "Climate"
Margaux Huth, Siling Chen (Research Assistants "ide3a" / TU Berlin).
"Digital campuses for green cities - International and multidisciplinary? How and why?" - this is the title of the contribution Margaux Huth and Siling Chen (researchers of the ide3a project led by ECDF professors Andrea Cominola and Jochen Rabe, among others) will make at the Science Slam on the topic of climate. Urban growth and the climate crisis are placing increasing stress on essential urban infrastructures and call for resilient and sustainable action. In urban environments, complex interactions between sectors must also be taken into account. In times of globalization and especially to cope with the climate crisis, all countries should cooperate and learn from each other. Therefore, international and multidisciplinary networking is indispensable. In order to make this exchange tangible already during studies, they are building a digital campus with the ide3a project. Through e-learning, e-research and e-mobility, students are introduced to the interrelationships of urban infrastructure. At the same time, ide3a creates a research network through the development of a simulation-based serious game.

Prof. Dr. Michael Ortgiese (ECDF Professor for "Traffic and Mobility Management" / TU Berlin)
Michael Ortgiese conducts research on new, cooperative mobility concepts for smaller cities and outer outskirts of large cities. In addition to the development of technologies, he is concerned with new co-creation processes in which transport users, municipalities and companies work together to develop interesting solutions from different perspectives. He works interdisciplinary with social scientists, engineers and economists.
Lecture "Open Science - Experimental Design Spaces for an Inclusive Digital Society".
Prof. Dr. Michelle Christensen/Prof. Dr. Florian Conradi (ECDF Professors* for "Open Science" / TU Berlin
The term "Open Science" refers to a cultural change in scientific working methods and communication. In open interdisciplinary research environments, scientists* collaborate with artists* and actors* from civil society. Experimenting with free and democratized technologies in these places enables an inclusive design approach and a more open exchange of knowledge at the interface of science and society. As part of their joint Visiting Professorship in Open Science at the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF), Florian Conradi and Michelle Christensen are exploring the potential of research in open lab structures and testing new forms of collaboration in science with the aim of breaking down the boundaries between theory and practice, politics and everyday life, science and activism. Their research, teaching, and experimental design practices focus on decolonial, feminist/queer, and sustainable approaches to free/open technologies.

Machines, products and people are becoming ever more closely networked with information technology. But how can digitization be shaped politically and socially so that it contributes to the necessary transformation of society toward sustainability? Tilman Santarius examines the opportunities and risks of digitization for reducing energy and resource consumption.
