ECDF Professor Guillermo Gallego was officially appointed to a W3 professorship at TU Berlin on January 27, 2025. He will hold the Chair of Robotic Interactive Perception at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at TU Berlin.
“It is a great honor for me to have been appointed as a Full Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at TU Berlin. I also owe this success to my colleagues, mentors, students and, of course, my friends and family,” said the Spanish-born professor. Guillermo Gallego's research focuses on the interface between robotics, computer vision and applied mathematics, with a focus on optimization. In his work, he seeks to optimize robotic perception, in particular the ability of robots to better perceive and interact with their environment. His interdisciplinaryprojects investigate how perception in intelligent systems can mimic the adaptability of biological organisms to improve the ability of robots to act “intelligently” and largely autonomously in complex environments.
Guillermo Gallego can already look back on an intense career: after studying electrical engineering at the Technical University of Madrid for five years and obtaining a master's degree in mathematical engineering, he continued his studies as a Fulbright scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology. There he earned two further master's degrees and a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering. After completing his doctorate, Guillermo Gallego (again) conducted research at the Technical University of Madrid and the University of Zurich before taking up his ECDF professorship at the TU Berlin in September 2019.
The Einstein Foundation Berlin and the Senate Chancellery for Higher Education and Research attach particular importance to the long-term establishment of the ECDF in Berlin as a center of science and research. The Senate Chancellery has therefore promised ten permanent ECDF professorships at an early stage. The selection process for these positions was carried out in 2020 and 2021, with five professors selected for each year. In 2023 and 2024, the first professors were able to take up their permanent positions, with more to follow after the appointment of Guillermo Gallego.
