Europe faces growing challenges in the areas of sustainable water management, marine ecosystems, and climate resilience. The INNFLOW consortium, a leading network of researchers, industry experts, and policy-makers, met in Berlin on March 25 and 26 to advance a strategic vision for Europe’s water, ocean, and maritime sectors. Hosted by the ECDF and TU Berlin, the meeting played a central role in preparing a proposal for the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) Water call by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

The meeting in Berlin was part of a broader series of strategic discussions across Europe, during which an ambitious proposal for the EIT Water KIC program was developed. Focusing on education, innovation, and market-driven solutions, INNFLOW is committed to delivering cutting-edge technologies and policy frameworks that promote economic impact, job creation, and sustainable business growth. The discussions in Berlin addressed key technological advancements, including predictive systems for drought and flood management, digital solutions for decision-making, and improved strategies for public engagement. These innovations are closely aligned with European strategic priorities, such as the new European Water Resilience Strategy, ensuring that Europe continues to lead in sustainable water management.

ECDF Professor Andrea Cominola, head of the Smart Water Networks Lab at ECDF and TU Berlin, emphasized Berlin’s role in shaping the European innovation agenda in the water sector: “The ideas and opportunities discussed during these intensive meetings will significantly advance the EU’s long-term strategies for water resilience.” INNFLOW is actively building strategic partnerships to expand its influence beyond Europe and strengthen its position as a global leader in water sustainability. As the application for the Water KIC takes shape, the consortium is committed to ensuring the initiative has real impact, with a focus on rapid market adoption and sustainable economic growth.
