Starting today, 50 students are hacking again at ECDF for sustainable cities: From November 30 to December 2, 2022, the ide3a Smart City Hackathon 2022 will take place for the third time and is the conclusion of the Smart Sensing and Smart Cities Schools that took place online this winter semester. The two Winter Schools focused on the digitization of critical urban infrastructures in the areas of water, mobility and IT.
During the hackathon, students from TU Berlin (TUB), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Politecnico Di Milano (PoliMi), will work together to solve one of four challenges. This year's challenges include installing blue-green infrastructure, protecting smart meter data, robust edge computing, and monitoring urban mobility. The hackathon program also includes two keynote presentations by Aurel von Richthofen (Arup) on semantic data for digital twins and by Ana Chubinidze (AdalanAI) on the importance of social innovation for AI applications in smart cities.
ECDF Professor Andrea Cominola - Chair of Smart Water Networks and Principal Investigator of the ide3a project - is looking forward to the three days with the students: "It is great that we can conclude the journey that started online with Smart Sensing and Smart Cities with an on-site event in Berlin. Finally, students can meet, give free rein to their creativity, and work together to develop solutions to important smart city challenges, using the knowledge gained in our online courses." The goal is to apply the new knowledge and skills, build some working prototypes, and most importantly, collaborate in international and multidisciplinary teams!". At the end of the three-day hackathon, the winners will be chosen.
Experts from different faculties of TU Berlin and international guest speakers from some of the ide3a partner universities (Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU); Dublin City University (DCU); Politecnico Di Milano (PoliMi); Krakow University of Technology (PK) and Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI)) taught the students during the Winter Schools. This year also featured guest speakers from the University of Western Australia, the University of Hong Kong, Friedrich Alexander University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and companies such as Ramboll and Form Follows You. The program included lectures and hands-on training on topics related to digital sensors, Open Data, Distributed IT Systems and related governance, and relevant stakeholders.
