The Board of Directors of the ECDF has decided to let the social media channel ‘ecdigitalfuture’ on platform X (formerly Twitter), which has existed since 2017, rest with immediate effect. The account will remain online, but no new posts will be published. With this step, the ECDF is joining a growing number of over 60 universities in German-speaking countries, as well as numerous research institutions, that have ceased active communication on X in recent months.

Since being taken over by entrepreneur Elon Musk, the platform has undergone fundamental changes. X is developing into a mouthpiece for extreme positions and for political influence – also in Germany. These developments, from the algorithmic favouring of selective content to the restriction of the organic reach, lead us, the ECDF and other scientific institutions, to refrain from further use of the platform.
