”Let’s talk about Science Reform” is a workshop on theoretical and methodological approaches in order to investigate the Open Science movement. The workshop will take place on May 12, 2025, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.. The aim of the event is to provide a forum for the critical reflection of theoretical and methodological approaches to investigate modern science reform and Open Science more specifically.
Over the past decade, the science system has undergone significant reforms, driven by the Open Science Movement, which lead to concerns about reproducibility and transparency in research. While Open Science has gained broad support, it has also faced criticism for its narrow definitions of "good" science, potential exclusionary effects, and its sometimes abrasive discourse culture.
To explore these debates, the one-day workshop in Berlin will bring together leading scholars who have critically examined the Open Science movement, including ECDF Scientific Advisory Board Member Fernanda Beigel, Professor of Sociology at the National University of Cuyo, Argentina, with a focus on Open Science. Speakers will present research on various aspects, including the movement’s narratives (Sheena F. Bartscherer), alignment between Open Science ideals and researcher’s realities (Sven Ulpts), Open Science in the social sciences and humanities (Fernanda Beigel), the financial implications of open access publishing (Stefanie Haustein), the politics of quantification and the "War on Science" (Bart Penders), and Metascience as a social movement (David Peterson).
The event will conclude with a panel discussion, inviting audience participation to identify open questions and future research directions on science reform.
