How is artificial intelligence changing our everyday lives? On June 17, 2025, the association "Helle Panke e.V." is hosting a lecture by ECDF Professor Helena Mihaljević (Professor of Data Science and Analytics at the Berlin University of Technology and Economics). The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Karl Liebknecht Haus.
We encounter artificial intelligence almost everywhere today: in automatic translations, in text writing, in medicine, or in personnel selection. Users often don't notice its use, but AI systems are increasingly influencing how we communicate, how decisions are made, and what information we see. This lecture will focus on so-called language models: programs that can process and generate human language. Using concrete examples, we will look at where such systems are used today and what consequences this can have for our everyday lives and social processes. Critical questions will also be addressed: What biases are inherent in the data that AI systems use to learn? How do they affect our ideas about language, knowledge, or political opinion formation? And how can the use of these technologies be designed so that as many people as possible can benefit from them? The lecture invites you to reflect together on the opportunities, challenges, and design possibilities of AI in a democratic society – without prior technical knowledge, but with an open mind.
