On October 21st, 2024 the kick-off event of the series “Quo Vadis - Open Science in Berlin and Brandenburg” will take place as the opener of the International Open Access Week 2024, which this year runs under the theme “Community over Commercialization”. The event will examine the measurement and further development of the open access transformation, with a focus on open data and community-led initiatives that should not be left to commercial providers alone. It questions common indicators such as publication figures and costs and sheds light on how new publication models and practices can be better captured and made visible.
Program:
- 14:00-14:10: Welcome by Prof. Dr. Heinz Pampel
- 14:10-15:30: Discussion
Participants in the discussion:
- Prof. Dr. Heinz Pampel (ECDF / HU)
- Irene Barbers (Research Center Jülich)
- Najko Jahn (SUB Göttingen)
- Dr. Jochen Johannsen (RWTH Aachen)
- Dr. Maxi Kindling (OABB)
Time and date:
October 21st, 2024 from 14:00 to 15:30
Place:

In order to determine the development of the transformation to open access, indicators such as publication figures or publication costs are often considered. Open data is a central building block for this. With OpenAlex and the accompanying Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, the open access community worldwide is well on the way to not leaving monitoring to commercial providers alone. At the same time, monitoring poses new challenges, for example when it comes to looking at more far-reaching principles of open science, e.g. in the area of science-led open access publishing or other publication formats and practices. Questions that arise here include:
- How can we capture the growing number of community-led initiatives and their publishing and funding models, rather than just counting the number of journal and article outputs for e.g.?
- How can institutions make their efforts to build open publication infrastructures more visible and how can the implementation of strategies be made visible not only with a view to the result at a point in time X, but with a view to the process?
- How much influence does what we measure and determine have on the path we take in the open access transformation?
The event is organized to mark the start of International Open Access Week 2024, which this year runs under the theme “Community over Commercialization” and is organized by the Open Access Office Berlin and ECDF Professor Heinz Pampel, who holds the Chair of Information Management at the Institute of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
This event is the kick-off event in the series Quo vadis open science in Berlin and Brandenburg 2024/25.
