Keynote: The Rise of the Adaptive Society

On August 20, 2025, ECDF-Professor Philipp Staab will give the  keynote “The Rise of the Adaptive Society“ during the ANSE Summer University 25 in Munich. Philipp Staab is professor of sociology, specializing in the future of work at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the ECDF, where he is also a member of the board of directors.

Staab combines topics of work, social structure analysis, sociology of technology, and political economy with a contemporary analytical approach. Currently, he is particularly concerned with questions regarding the political shaping of digital capitalism, the relationship between digitization and sustainability, and the role of critical infrastructures for the future viability of modern societies.

This keynote will discuss the challenges of global warming, economic stagnation, and individual overload for shaping an optimistic future. Today, the focus seems to be on disaster mitigation. Even if this is achieved, people will still need to navigate a world characterized by sudden change and adaptive pressure. As a result, concerns about self-preservation are beginning to eclipse those of individual and collective self-realization. Consequently, the rise of the adaptive society is becoming increasingly evident.

To attend the keynote, please register for the 11th ANSE Summer University. This year‘s ANSE Summer University will take place from August 18 to 22, 2025, at the Katholische Stiftungshochschule München.
