Discussion/Lecture: Digital Capitalism

On 31 October 2019, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation will host a discussion event with Prof. Dr. Philipp Staab on the subject of "Digital Capitalism" in Berlin.

Philipp Staab illuminates digital capitalism from different perspectives in order to bring it more precisely to the concept. He shows how digital monitoring and evaluation practices are penetrating more and more areas of the economy, thereby exacerbating social inequality. The specific thing about digital capitalism, according to Staab, is the emergence of "proprietary markets": whereas in the past it was a question of making things and selling them at a profit, in the age of scarcity it is a question of ownership of the markets themselves. In his lecture, Philipp Staab will focus on the development of inequality and class structures in contemporary capitalism. Philipp Staab is Professor of Sociology of the Future of Work at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF). He is the author of "Digitaler Kapitalismus. Markt und Herrschaft in der Ökonomie der Unknappheit" (Suhrkamp 2019) and "Falsche Versprechen. Growth in Digital Capitalism" (Hamburger Edition 2016).
