Berlin Science Week: Pairing Research Talks - Gender & Diversity Edition

Bridging differences, finding common ground in times of political polarization? Gender and diversity experts from different backgrounds discuss and develop “common ground” as part of the Berlin Science Week. The central topic of the ECDF Pairing Research Talks is digitalization. Two people from different subjects or disciplines, of different genders and who are looking at digitalization from different perspectives are brought together. Participants include Tabea Flügge, ECDF-Professor for Digital technologies for the reconstruction of complex facial defects at Charité Berlin, Raul Aguayo-Krauthausen, activist for inclusion and accessibility, Sénamé Koffi Agbodjinou, architect, anthropologist and founder of L' Africaine d'Architecture as well as Woelabs Togo and Mareike Lisker, research assistant at HTW Berlin. The event will be moderated by Michelle Christensen, ECDF-Professor for Open Science at Technische Universität Berlin.

In short pitches, they will first present the focus of their own work or research on the topic of “Gender & Diversity”. We will then discuss overarching questions in a moderated discussion: Does digitalization advance social diversity and inclusion? What risks does it pose in this regard? Digitization can, for example, bridge physical distances and eliminate unconscious prejudices and biases through extensive anonymity or invisibility online. However, these opportunities for participation are offset by major differences in terms of technical access options and, in some cases, financial hurdles.

The panelists have very different backgrounds. What assessments of the opportunities and risks of digitalization do they share, and where do their views differ? Is there perhaps an interest in exchanging ideas and discovering the previously untapped potential of digitalization? The Panel Talks focus on complementing each other's perspectives and exploring common ground: Are there opportunities to integrate digital solutions even more in our own operations? Have the opportunities and risks also been weighed up in terms of sustainability? Where is there still digital potential for more equal opportunities and inclusion?

These and other interesting connections between digitalization and gender and diversity will be discussed at this Pairing Research Talk. The event will take place from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

After the pairing research talks, participants are cordially invited to attend the exhibition “Digital Colonialism” with snacks and drinks.
